Wow. Just wow. Whatever the Casanova di Neri Brunello brings to the table it is this Tenuta Nuova that not only confirms the estate’s current peak performance, the sangiovese here within takes Montalcino to another level. A plateau to describe and descry the modernity of design and effect. The cause is just, it is noble and it is right. Intoxicating perfume, that sweetness of subtle volatility, in other words spot on acidity here met and succeeded by chalky liquidity that can only come from place. The south of Montalcino. Magical vineyards to the southeast of Sant'Angelo in Colle. Smallest berries in this vintage made for a concentrated and powerful Brunello with a saltiness, sweet acidity and a note of blood orange. Ages 30 months in (20 per cent new) tonneaux and another two years in bottle. Complimenti alla famiglia Neri, Giacomo e Figli. Oh mio dio, man. Drink 2026-2039. Tasted twice, November 2024.

From the project started in the 90s, a Brunello of finesse and elegance. Nose of red currant, then mint and nettarina, with hints of geranium and red orange. The mouthfeel has salty tannins, notes of small fruits and closes persistent on menthol notes.

Crowning this estate’s three Brunello releases in 2020, Tenuta Nuova encapsulates its dry, balmy, forested surroundings near Sant’Angelo in Colle with aplomb. It was picked on the mornings of September 15 to 17 to avoid the afternoon heat. The nose offers pronounced rosemary, thyme and tobacco, lightly sprinkled with cocoa. Plump red plum and ripe persimmon are layered between sweet, dusty tannins. Zesty, citrussy acidity gives an invigorating lift. There are no rough edges here – it's irresistible now but with the stuffing and substance for another 12-15 years.

Complex bouquet with intriguing cherry and flower aromas, menthol, also spices, the wood is perfectly integrated; polished and finely chiselled on the palate, the tightly woven tannins and acidity in balance, the multi-faceted finish is long and long.

Dark ruby red with light purple reflections. Complex on the nose, iron, dark cherry fruit, rich plum, some lovage. On the palate lots of salt and juice, complex, comes in many layers, with finely-meshed tannins, deep and with full splendour, keeps coming back, big.

Sweetness of red and black currants, light vanilla, toasted olive, orange, incense and thyme, tannin at the moment almost angry and tight but which opens up at times showing incredible rigor and definition, an exciting prospect in the mouth

In my mind, this is the wine that best represents the Casanova di Neri house style. With 30 months of aging in tonneaux, it shows enormous richness and texture, and the stellar fruit quality appears with more primary elegance compared to the more expensive Cerretalto that is released with an extra year of aging. That dynamic is especially pronounced in a comparison of the 2019 and 2018 vintages. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova has a dark vein of toasted spice, black fruit, ink, blackberry compote, licorice and star anise. Dark as night, it is exceptionally well crafted with a robust delivery of concentrated fruit and solid tannic structure. You can count on excellent cellar potential, or at a minimum, serve it with a classic steak. Production is exactly 69,696 bottles.

Fremragende smooth syrefokuseret brunello med essensfornemmelse af galestro-skifer og kirsebær. Korenderkoncentrat og rustnoter. Tenuta Nuova is something next level and you know this from the moment you put nose to glass. It consumes the senses straight away with its intoxicating perfume as deep as it is strong. Muscular in that regard and exponentially so at the intersection of palate and structure. The stuffing, intensity, power and layers are what we call “off the charts” and there are but a few vintages that create, instil and then leave this kind of impression.

Velsagtens di Neri-familiens mest berømte brunello, der har gået sin sejrsgang verden over, hvilket også for længst har sat sig i priserne. Vinen er resultatet af et rigtigt vinmagerprojekt, hvor alt har været nøje planlagt og gennemtænkt, inden den første vinplante overhovedet blev sat i jorden, og det for at vise, hvor langt man var i stand til at flytte hegnspælene. Vinen er lagret på franske tonneaux (500 liter) og fremstår som en utroligt velskabt, moderne brunello. Jeg har altid haft di Neris traditionelle brunello som favorit af de to, men med 2019’eren er det dødt løb. Ja, nærmest omvendt. Næsen er kende mere elegant og indsmigrende end white label-versionen, selvom den har en mere fadet og toastet violnæse. Præget af espressobønne, bitter mintchokolade, tranebærjuice, jod og tobakkede kamfertoner. Munden åbner med et saftig skub, frugten er lakridset og supercremet med kirsebær, appelsinskal og tørret salvie. Frugtsyren når lige at svinge sig op i tempo, inden tanninerne sætter ind og flår i kindtøjet i en heftigt adstringerende finale. Et imponernede powerhouse, bygget til det lange løb, men slet ikke i zen endnu, dertil er den for ung, streng og krævende, men den rummer et stort potentiale, hvis man kan forlene sig med den muskuløse og ekspressive stil.
