Med vingårdar direkt intill Mouton- och Lafite Rothschild i norra Pauillac samt med södra parceller nära Pichon-Baron och Lynch Bages är det knappast förvånande att Château Grand-Puy Ducasse levererar viner från vänstra stranden i världsklass. En del av hemligheten bakom slottets dramatiskt stigande kvalitetskurva är superstjärnan Hubert de Boüard från Château Angelus, som sedan 2013 har varit knuten som oenologisk konsult. Vinet och omdömena har aldrig varit bättre… Det här är Pauillac när det är som allra störst för priset...

“I loved the 2022 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse, another Pauillac that shines for its purity and length. Offering lots of red and black fruits, graphite, tobacco, and spicy oak, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, nicely integrated, ripe, fine-grained tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It shows the richer style of the vintage yet has a solid spine of freshness that keeps it light on its feet. 93-95+”

”Ripe and filling, the blackcurrant and black cherry fruit is ripe and fleshy, a nice chewy sensation on the palate as well as cool blue fruit and chalky, minty, liquorice laced edges with fresh mint and crushed stones which give the minerality and the sense of gravel. I like the powerful undertone here, this has structure and backbone and a real drive as well as a sense of stateliness. Quiet, less overtly lively than some, more strict but also more serious in a good way. Tasted twice.”

“The nose is pretty, fresh, elegant, racy and offers a nice graphite grain. There is an aerial frank side and a certain righteousness. We have notes of graphite, camphor, wild/pulpy blackberry and lighter small bright blue berries associated with touches of fairly ripe wild red berries as well as fine hints of bergamot, infusion and a discreet note of pepper. The palate is mineral and offers smoothness, a tangy frame, breadth, nice definition, delicacy, tension, fine straightness and accuracy. An airy side in its fat. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy blackberry, cherry and slight notes of blackcurrant associated with a touch of violet, black tea, caramelization, toast as well as a fine hint of vanilla, sweet spices and a discreet sapid hint. Is it a harmonious wine? A hint of dark chocolate in the background. There is a certain chewiness and a nice shimmering and sapid acidity.”

“The 2022 Grand Puy Ducasse has an airy nose, well-defined with potpourri, even lavender infusing the black fruit. Pencil box hints emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. Tightly-coiled black fruit is laced with cracked black pepper and tobacco. The finish is tannic, but one can appreciate the focus and length on the aftertaste. Very fine.”

This is finer, less extracted and has much more freshness, brightness, lift and elegance than in recent vintages. On the nose, which is slightly restrained at first, there’s a subtle hint of graphite and of the cedar that will bring additional opulence to this with bottle age. Ripe blueberry and blackberry, a little bramble too, sweet almond and frangipane. On the palate the fruit is a little lighter in hue – with raspberries joining the blackberries and, in so doing, accentuating the sense of freshness. There’s nice detail too – and that will be aided further in the years to come with the considerable investment in small parcel vinification now underway. The tannins are just a little coarse on the finish. But this is very promising and the best recent vintage from here. 92-94.”
