Sandeman is perhaps the most dense, almost black colour of the three Sogrape 2018s tasted here. A lovely sense of kirsch-like ripeness and purity here, maybe even Black Forest gateau, with its density of cherry and depth of chocolate. There's a lovely floral lift too, edged with violet and ashy aromatics. In the mouth it is, in some ways, the marriage of the Offley and Ferreira, with the sweet, opulent fruit and creamy openess of the Offley, but the muscle and brooding depth, and structural elements, of the Ferreira. A sumptuous 2018 this, drinking surprisingly well now but undoubtedly built for the long haul. It is the best Sandeman I have ever tasted. No retail listings for the 2018 as yet, so price and stockist quoted is for the 2016, and is indicative only.

This ripe Port boasts stewed plums and dense tannins, making it opulent, rich and set for long-term aging. Spice and a hint of cardamom give further complexity. Of course, this fine wine will age.

A blend of 50% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional, 5% Sousão and 5% ‘other native red varietals’ from Quinta do Seixo and Quinta do Vau, both properties on the south side of the Douro in the Cima Corgo: very deep inky ‘black’ colour; demure and brooding on the nose, distinctly ripe, hot country fruit (kirsh) with a touch of liquorice and tar; big, ripe dark chocolate flavours, layered spicy depth, impressively structured with ripe tannins giving plenty of grip and leading to a big, expressive finish. Perhaps lacking a little in freshness but very, very good. A definite keeper.

The 2018 Vintage Porto is mostly a 50/40 blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional with Tinto Cão and Sousão filling out the rest of the blend. It comes in with 106 grams of residual sugar. When last seen, this seemed pretty fine, but it was not yet bottled and there were some questions to answer. Let's check in. With some bottle time, this has fleshed out and shows off its concentration to balance superb structure. The structure may be the best feature. That is part of the identity of most great Ports, and this easily meets any such challenge. There is a serious backbone supporting the fruit and a big finish with appropriate grip and length. A day or two after it was opened, it was more vigorous and powerful than ever.
I did have some other questions about balance the first time, though, and the answers are still not entirely clear. This is very ripe. Sometimes I thought it might cross the line to over-ripeness. That's less of a sin with Port, perhaps. Classic in its flavor profile on opening, this eventually shows more baked plums and stewed plums. If there's a question here, it is whether the fruit profile will keep up with the superb structure as it ages. Overall, it shows the ability to age for some decades and develop more complexity. I'd bet on it, but let's be a little conservative just now. There were 19,333 bottles produced.

Lots to like here, with a mix of crushed plum, raspberry paste and blackberry compote notes that work in harmony while fruitcake, bramble and apple wood accents fill in on the juicy finish. Has excellent range and depth. Best from 2030 through 2045. 1,610 cases made, 170 cases imported.

Violett.

This is toasty and earthy with notes of ripe plums and blueberry marmalade. Hints of crushed walnut and decomposed forest floor, too. Creamy and polished on the palate with a full body and mellow sweetness. Layers of attractive dark fruit flavors sitting on a bed of soft, velvety tannins. Lingering finish. Delicious now
Grandes Escolhas
Deeply concentrated and opaque in both colour and aroma, with a focus on black fruits, bitter chocolate and black tea, all dense yet appealing. Very full-bodied, with considerable volume on the palate that rounds out the tannins. Exceptionally concentrated, almost chewy in texture, yet the overall richness and quality shine through. A Vintage Port built for long ageing.
