Nature was kind to the Douro Valley in 2011 delivering perfect weather throughout the growing season. For most producers, it was an easy decision to “declare” a vintage. Taylor Fladgate’s 2011 is sensational. Tightly wound and mineraly, it’s surprisingly approachable and engaging already. But make no mistake: This is a wine for the long haul because of its structure, density and balance. If you have a child born in 2011, buy some to share with him or her on their 21st birthday and beyond. (Michael Apstein)

First tasted in the first half of 2016, when we awarded it 96 points, it seems even better now, in June 2017, showing greater tension, precision and elegance. Exuberant aromas of red and black fruits are enveloped by pronounced floral, toasted and sweet spice notes, along with hints of tobacco and chocolate. Particularly impressive is its overall balance, despite its youth. Alcohol: 20%.

Falstaff

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, purple reflections. Candied purple fruit, black berry, subtle cassis, nuances of liquorice, fine mocha touch, ripe plums in the background. Firm, well-balanced sweetness, firm, ripe tannins, ripe berry fruit, mineral, finesse-rich acid structure, fine herbal savouriness and some nougat on the finish, very long aftertaste, elegance and balance.

The 2011 Taylor’s Vintage 2011 has a multifaceted, Pandora’s Box of a nose that is mercurial in the glass: cassis at first before blackberry and raspberry politely ask it to move aside, followed by wilted rose petals and Dorset plum. Returning after one 45 minutes that nose has shut up shop. The palate is sweet and sensual on the entry, plush and opulent, with copious black cherries, boysenberry and cassis fruit, curiously more reminiscent of Fonseca! It just glides across the palate with a mouth-coating, glycerine-tinged finish that has a wonderful lightness of touch, demonstrating how Vintage Port is so much more accessible in its youth nowadays. But don’t let that fool you into dismissing the seriousness or magnitude of this outstanding Taylor’s.

Wine Spectator

Powerful, featuring concentrated dark plum and spicy cherry flavors that are finely balanced, showing notes of raspberry preserves. The mocha and wild herb accents are interwoven and supported by powerful tannins. The finish offers intense grip and violet hints. Best from 2020 through 2045.

Wine Enthusiast

There is an initial smoky character, followed by a burst of ripe, rich black fruits, giving the wine weight and a dark, brooding core. Black plum and berry fruits, considerable acidity and a delicate final perfume flesh out this wine's character. For serious aging.

Gismondi on Wine

A third look at this wine in four years confirms it is going nowhere fast. This will be a great Taylor for those with patience and a cellar. Vargellas was the first Taylor quinta to harvest beginning September 10. Smaller amounts were contributed by Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco. The nose is fiery and youthful with fragrant, floral violet tones. The palate is Taylor dry and reserved with layers of sweet black fruits and similar tannins mixed with liquorice root, mineral, orange peel and black tea. So rich, powerful yet well managed, and easily identifiable as Taylor. One to age for decades. A super bottle of port but as we mentioned, you will have to wait.

Very pretty pure fruit on the nose: crushed berries and minerals with a licorice and graphite undertone. Full body, medium sweet with chewy tannins that are polished and firm. This shows balance and harmony, but remains powerful, muscular and toned. 11,000 cases produced of this foot-trodden wine.

Jancis Robinson

This wine was placed immediately after the super-opulent Fonseca in the BFT tasting which may have been a mistake. This is restrained. Well mannered, discreet, keeps its powder very dry. But on the palate it opens out in the most superb, burgundian peacock's tail sort of way. Another wonderful wine from The Fladgate Partnership. Utterly different from the Fonseca. Upright and straight backed. But irreproachable. My gums are virtually impervious to sugar and acid but this wine set them vibrating a bit. Dried prunes ground up with rocks.

Very harmonious, with beautifully refined ripe fruit, balsamic notes and fine minerality, displaying great character and precise fruit definition. Creamy and impressively structured on the palate, sophisticated and full of character.
