This is really fine on the palate with wonderfully integrated tannins that give tension and focus. It’s medium-bodied with lovely berry, cherry, cedar and spice. Peaches and flower stems, too. Creamy texture. Extremely long and vivid. Structured, but showing beautiful drinkability with wonderful balance and form. One to drink or hold.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous interpretation of Northwest Montalcino terroir, with a darkly alluring bouquet of sage and rosemay giving way to crushed blackberries and stone dust. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness, perfectly balanced by crisp red fruits, mineral tones and a core of vibrant acidity. It finishes grippy and long yet surprisingly frish, with a staining of primary concentration that lingers on and on. The 2019 was fermented using 70 % whole cluster fruit.

Castiglion del Bosco's 2019 Brunello is fresh and bright, offering cherry aromas with a balsamic edge. Fine tannins support a soft and velvety palate with a savoury, salty undertone of green olives in brine overlaid with cherry and blood orange sapidity. The finish is really zingy and fresh – almost minty – with a lovely stony touch. There's more sapidity and salinity here compared to Campo del Drago, which is a richer, fuller-bodied bottling, and as with many 2019s, the wine is approachable in its youth yet offers years of drinking pleasure.

Many Mediterranean shades describe the secondary scene of remarkable olfactory beauty. Showing sweet fruit, plump cherry, cured tobacco and perfumed redwood, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a savory side that is nicely folded into a generous core of pronounced fruit. The wine feels smooth and soft over the palate with velvety tannins. This is a bottle you can enjoy upon release if you so choose.

The outstanding 2018 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino comes from this vintage that saw a very warm end to summer. Dark truffle shavings combine with dried herbs, white pepper and shades of Nori on the nose. The palate is soft and inviting with silky tannins that frame a beautiful core of red fruits, orange rind and truffle shavings. This is seriously good stuff for the price that is already providing plenty of drinking enjoyment.

Ripe berries and hints of red licorice and herbs on the nose, following through to a medium-bodied palate with fine, tightly packed tannins and a taut finish for now. Give it two years to unwind a bit. Try from 2025.

Vinous

A duste blend of cedary spice, mentholated herbs, rose petals and sour cherry wafts up from the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino. It’s round and supple in feel, with floral-laved red and black fruits complemented by a subtle tinge of sweet spice. This leaves a bitter twang of sour berries, while a burst of residual acidity adds a cheek-puckering freshness, and a gentle tug of tannin slowly recedes. The 2018 has improved each time I’ve tasted it in the last five months, and it now shows the ruggedness of Northwestern Montalcino Sangiovese, but in a wonderfully balanced way.

Decanter

In the far northwest of Montalcino, the sprawling Castiglion del Bosco estate stretches over several hills of varying heights, exposures and textures. From 42 hectares dedicated to Brunello comes this impressive production. The 2018 does not explode with its fragrance, but slowly unfolds its suggestive floral scents. These reach a crescendo on the palate, melding seamlessly with joyful, pure pomegranate and cherry flavours. The supple tannins have a velvety texture. Unrestrained and fluid, it's hard to resist now.

Rich at the start, with a touch of glycerine in the texture before civilised tannins take over on the finish. It offers notes of plum, cherry, earth, tobacco and iron that come through, with a firm grip of tannins on the finish.

The nose puts cherries front and center, intertwined with roses with heavier tar and graphite, before umami flavors of mushroom, balsamic vinegar, seaweed and soy slowly emerge. On the chalky palate, dark chocolate pushes up against the showboating cherries before a kick of spice sets up a long, energetic finish.

The 2018 vintage is a beautiful dark red color and is very aromatic. It has a firm and chewy texture along with fresh, appetizing and nicely balanced flavors. On the palate it is intense, elegant, and long.

Robust and powerful from the start, the Castiglion del Bosco 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows broad shoulders and ample brawn. But at the end of the day, the wine's concentration remains on the medium to medium-rich side of the spectrum. It stays firmly within the boundaries of Sangiovese. Dark fruit and blackcurrant segue to savory notes of toasted spice, black olive, earth and rusty nail. This is an ample production of 180,000 bottles.

Surprisingly pale garnet colour. A whiff of oak vanillins leads off the top, with sweet red fruit, though the palate turns more finessed and subtle. I like the more delicate tack this wine takes in 2018, the reduced wood impact, the harmonious finish.
